*City Council To Recognize Lunar New Year With Lion Dancers*

"Citizen Of The Month Also To Be Recognized"

 

    The Las Vegas City Council will join in the Lunar New Year celebrations *at the Jan. 15 City Council meeting that will begin following the 8:30 a.m. Redevelopment Agency meeting in Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, located at 495 S. Main St.*

 

    Ward 5 Councilwoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong will recognize the Lunar New Year and the celebrations happening throughout the city. To celebrate, the Lohan School of Shaolin lion dancers will perform in honor of the Year of the Snake. Lunar New Year officially starts Jan. 29 this year.

 

    In addition, Ward 4 Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske will recognize the city’s January Citizen of the Month, retiring Municipal Court Judge Cynthia Leung. Judge Leung is the first Chinese-American woman elected as Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge and has presided over Las Vegas Municipal Court Department 1 since 2008. She twice served as Municipal Court chief judge and served as president of the Nevada Judges of Limited Jurisdiction. She was named 2015 Judge of the Year by the Nevada Judges of Limited Jurisdiction.

 

    Judge Leung’s passion is the Women in Need of Change (WIN) Court, a trauma-responsive treatment court that addresses criminal behaviors of female chronic offenders arrested in the city of Las Vegas.
