     The city of Las Vegas invites the community to see the play, “References To Salvador Dali Make Me Hot” by Puerto Rican playwright and screenwriter José Rivera, a presentation of A Public Fit Theatre Company [ https://apublicfit.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], at Charleston Heights Arts Center April 4-22, 2025. Shows begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; Sunday shows start at 2 p.m. The arts center is located at 800 Brush St. Tickets, priced at $45 general admission and $35 for military, seniors and students, may be purchased online here [ https://ci.ovationtix.com/35056/production/1220406?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]. Same-day ticket sales at the arts center box office are limited to cash only.

 

     “References To Salvador Dali Make Me Hot” won an Obie Award for writing in 2000. The play premiered in Costa Mesa, California, in 2000 and had its New York premiere in 2001. Gigi Guizado directs this Las Vegas production for mature audiences with a cast of six:


* Moon: The moon in the sky, Gabriela's friend.
* Coyote: A wild one.
* Cat: A fat one, Gabriela's pet.
* Martín: an age 14 Latino, Gabriela's neighbor.
* Gabriela: an age 27 Latina, an army housewife.
* Benito: an age 29 Latino, Gabriela's husband, a soldier.

 

     The play opens in the dusty backyard of her house in Barstow, California, where Gabriela waits for her soldier husband to return from war. Grappling with loneliness and desire, her vivid imagination weaves together dreams, memories and fantasy while the Moon plays the violin and sings to the Cat and Coyote. Rivera’s iconic work of magical realism is a poetic masterpiece, inviting audiences into a world where reality and fantasy blur, challenging our perceptions of love, marriage, sexuality, identity and the pursuit of happiness in an unpredictable world.
