     News media are invited to join Las Vegas Municipal Court Department 6 Judge Kelly Giordani and staff for the graduation of 11 participants from the Veterans Treatment Court program at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Council Chambers at Las Vegas City Hall, 495 S. Main St. in downtown Las Vegas.

 

     During their time in Veterans Treatment Court, these participants have found employment and stable housing, established healthy boundaries with friends and family, completed individualized treatment and educational classes and maintained their commitment to recovery. They have built upon what they learned and have become successful members of the Las Vegas community.

 

     Veterans Treatment Court is a collaborative approach to help veterans involved in the criminal justice system address barriers to success and provide needed resources. The goal is to successfully rehabilitate veterans through creative and alternative sentencing, and provide veterans with the tools they need in order to lead a life as productive and law-abiding citizens.

 

     Veterans Treatment Court became an official city of Las Vegas specialty court in April of 2014. Those who have served in any branch of the United States Armed Forces and are currently charged with a misdemeanor criminal offense before the Las Vegas Municipal Court are eligible. The 12-to-18-month program is voluntary and requires regular court appearances, mandatory attendance at treatment sessions, abstinence from all alcohol and mind-altering substances, random testing for drug and alcohol use, and staying out of trouble (no new criminal offenses). Participants are linked to programs, benefits and services they earned through the Veterans Affairs department. At the end of the program, the graduates’ charges are dismissed and their records with the city of Las Vegas are sealed.

 

     Judge Giordani has presided over Veterans Treatment Court since July of 2022. Since that date, the court has graduated 33 participants and increased the participation rate by 100 percent. Veterans Treatment Court currently is funded by a U.S. Department of Justice Veterans Treatment Court Grant, the Nevada Administrative Office of the Courts, and a city of Las Vegas Municipal Court budget allocation for specialty courts.
