Hello Residents,

 

As summer starts to wind down and kids get back to school, I’m excited to share with you all of the exciting activities the City of North Las Vegas  was up to over the past few months. I am proud to share the many back to school supply giveaway events and pool parties that took place not just in my Ward, but across the city. Thanks to the amazing collaboration of so many community partners, we were able to provide our residents’ children a leg-up when it came to backpacks, supplies, clothes and more.

 

A highlight of my summer is always the 4th of July. As an immigrant to this country who has become an American citizen, this holiday is very special to me and I feel incredibly grateful and honored being able to celebrate it. This year was especially significant as my family and I were able to enjoy the fireworks from my office on the 9th floor of City Hall. Not only did we enjoy an amazing view but Mayor Goynes-Brown had the same desire and we enjoyed it together. The city was beautiful and my gratitude grew as I thought about the rights we enjoy - Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

*New AI-Powered, Real-Time Translation Software Launched for Public Meetings*

 

As the most diverse city in Nevada, the City of North Las Vegas was thrilled to launch Wordly, a new AI-powered, real-time translation service at the Aug. 2 City Council and Redevelopment Agency meeting! 

 

Spanish-speaking community members can now interact in real-time with our government officials during public meetings. Wordly works by instantly capturing a speaker’s comments and sending the translation to a participant’s mobile device via text or audio; no app download or special equipment is required. 

 

Adopting this real-time translation software is the next step in the City’s ongoing efforts to expand accessibility and engagement with the community’s growing Spanish-speaking population. Our city is the first jurisdiction in Nevada, and one of the first in the country, to provide real-time, AI-powered translation service to residents. We started with Spanish translation since more than 40% of North Las Vegas residents identify as Hispanic, however Wordly is equipped to interpret more than 30 languages, and we expect to roll out additional languages in the future!

*Fire Station 51 Pancake Breakfast & Open House*

 

In June North Las Vegas Fire Station 51 hosted a Pancake Breakfast and Open House event for the community. It was wonderful to see families in our community come together to meet our firefighters and paramedics. Everyone enjoyed the live DJ, had a chance to explore the inside of a fire truck, eat delicious food and practice bike safety with a bicycle rodeo course. The food was prepared by volunteers and the North Las Vegas Fire Department. It was so heartwarming to watch the excitement as children won free bikes and families collected raffle prizes.

*Breaking Ground on the City’s Newest Fire Station*

 

Speaking of our North Las Vegas Fire Department, earlier this summer the city broke ground on the future site of our new Fire Station 58. This will be the ninth fire station in the City of North Las Vegas and serve more than 30,000 residents in the Tule Springs area. Construction has begun and is expected to be completed in late summer 2024! 

 

The developers are building and equipping the fire station as part of the development agreement negotiated with the City. I want to thank the developers of the master-planned communities of The Villages at Tule Springs and Valley Vista for being great partners and sharing the vision of this Council to keep the City of North Las Vegas one of the safest, most proactive public safety communities in Nevada.

 

We look forward to the process of this build and we are so excited to put more firefighters into our neighborhoods!

*NLVPD Badges and Bros Basketball Brunch*

 

Our North Las Vegas Police Department held their annual NLVPD Badges and Bros Basketball Brunch in June at Silver Mesa Recreation center. This event was created as part of our Community Oriented Policing (COP) program to encourage positive relationships and trust between law enforcement and our community members. Designed to mirror the NBA All Star Weekend, this event includes skills competitions, pick-up games, a DJ announcer and is SO MUCH FUN!  It is inspiring to see how our police officers not only protect community members, but also go above and beyond to earn their trust.

*New Affordable Housing Apartment Complex Opens*

 

I was very excited to attend the Lake Mead West Apartments grand opening located in my Ward along with Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown and Councilman Isaac Barron. Affordable housing is one of the priorities this Council is addressing, as Southern Nevada across the board lacks affordable housing options. The Lake Mead West Apartments help alleviate that and offer living spaces with beautiful amenities, usable community spaces and wrap-around services offered on-site by Hopelink of Southern Nevada. 

 

I want to thank Joe DiRaffaele, Hassan Chaudhry and the entire Foresight Companies team for working with this Council and our City teams to bring this incredible affordable housing option to our residents.

*Celebrating National Park & Recreation Month*

 

Our Park and Recreation team is made up of wonderful, hard-working individuals who give our residents the best outdoor experiences possible. In July we celebrated our amazing team and community members by participating in National Park and Recreation Month.

 

Our team hosted a July #WhereCommunityGrowsCNLV Selfie Challenge where community members earned prizes all month long by visiting different parks, snapping a selfie and then taking those selfies to a City of North Las Vegas Recreation Center to receive a punch card worth prizes.

 

In cities where there are strong park and recreation systems, strong communities grow. Thank you to our Park and Recreation team for your great efforts and dedication to bringing our community together, keeping our parks green and beautiful, and providing so many indoor and outdoor recreational outlets for our residents of all ages!

*The City Gives Away More Than 1,100 FREE Backpacks & Supplies!*

 

The City of North Las Vegas, along with over 30 community partners, was thrilled to give out more than 1,100 FREE backpacks plus school supplies to community children at our Back to School Giveaway event held at Neighborhood Recreation Center! We know how financially challenging back-to-school time can be for families and wanted to make sure our kids were as prepared as possible. Thanks to our NLVPD officers and City team members who helped with this event, as well as all our partners who provided supplies and their time including Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, representatives from Senator Jacky Rosen’s and Congressman Steven Horsford's offices; and Bella+Canvas, Amazon, SilverSummit Healthplan, and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield!

*Welcoming New Businesses to the Neighborhood *

 

This summer we officially cut the ribbon on the shopping center at the corner of Carey and Revere (722 W. Carey Ave.). The center is now home to multiple local restaurants including Wow Wings, Sebastian’s Family Pizza, Jerry’s Down Home Kitchen and Sabores Mexican Restaurant, in addition to Beyond the Barrier Salon Suites. We were so happy that the owners of the center’s businesses were on hand to celebrate with us. Congratulations to all of the local entrepreneurs and thank you to Agora Realty and Management for this wonderful addition to the community. We listened when you said you wanted more restaurants and sit-down dining options!!

*Celebrating ‘I Am Possible’ Graduates*

 

Over summer the City of North Las Vegas also celebrated the latest class of graduates from the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center’s  ‘I Am Possible’ program. Established in 2021 through the CCC’s unique Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Grant Program, it is the first of its kind in Nevada municipal jails. With the primary focus of the program on rehabilitation rather than incarceration, ‘I Am Possible’ provides offenders individualized tools for recovery with a goal to reduce recidivism.

*North Las Vegas Kids Visit Raider Team Headquarters*

 

Kids in the City of North Las Vegas’ Safekey program, run through our Parks and Recreation Department,  recently had the awesome opportunity to visit the Las Vegas Raiders team headquarters for a back-to-school event. The Raiders invited students from Neighborhood Recreation Center and Silver Mesa Recreation Center to participate in fitness drills and play on the same indoor practice fields that the Raiders do. All of the children received essential supplies for the new school season in addition to a brand new pair of shoes. The Raiders have been great community supporters and we appreciate the organization hosting our North Las Vegas kids!

*Unplug and Play at North Las Vegas City Hall’s Liberty Park*

 

Our very own Liberty Park right outside City Hall welcomed over 150 kids on July 8 for our Second Annual Unplug and Play event. The event was organized with kids of all ages in mind and inspired them to take a day off from their electronics to play and interact with each other. Every child in attendance from as young as a few months to as old as 15 years received age-appropriate toys thanks to our community partners. Gifts included Lego sets, dollhouses, craft kits, skateboards and so much more! Our North Las Vegas firefighters and police officers—and our K9s, of course! — were also present handing out goodies and playing fun games with the families on the warm summer morning. There was also plenty of ice cream and water activities to keep everyone cool as the morning progressed. A huge thank you to all our community partners and volunteers that made this event truly special for our City of North Las Vegas residents!

*Zion Choice Garden*

 

Over summer I had the opportunity to visit the Zion Choice Garden, a group project between the City and Zion United Methodist Church. The goal of the project is to educate and inspire North Las Vegas residents to garden and enjoy the healthy fruits of their labor! The tour was part of a neighborhood meeting to discuss rezoning two parcels adjacent to the church and adding an urban agriculture overlay district to these properties. The rezoning will allow services to be expanded such as having a community garden, a farm shed, greenhouse, farm stand, hydroponic technology lab and more. It was exciting to walk the grounds of the beautiful garden and see the results of urban agriculture in our city.

*2nd Annual Mayan **Cultural **Guayabera Festival*

 

I had the privilege of attending the 2nd Mayan Cultural Guayabera Festival held at the Neighborhood Recreation Center on July 15. The event featured live music, handicrafts with vivid colors and textures, and enchanting Guayaberas. Connecting with fellow community residents, we celebrated the richness of our city and event attendees got to learn about the guayabera, known as the “shirt of Yucatan.'' These garments have a feeling of airness and comfort, making them a perfect selection for hot climates. What is truly fascinating is the profound historical and cultural significance the guayabera has. Its origins trace back to diverse regions, stretching from Mexico to Spanish-American countries like Cuba and the Philippines. The event was a powerful reminder of the captivating heritage of many North Las Vegas residents and their ties to the enchanting Mayan culture. It brought us together in a joyous celebration of both tradition and diversity.

*Touring UNR Extension’s New Location *

 

On July 17, I visited the newest location of the University of Nevada, Reno Extension, which is situated across from North Las Vegas City Hall. UNR Extension is the University's outreach unit, providing valuable information to communities through its statewide offices. This newest location will offer programs like small business education and early childhood professional training, benefiting youth and families in our community. Hola residentes,

 

A medida que el verano comienza a llegar a su fin y los niños regresan a la escuela, estoy emocionada de compartir con ustedes todas las emocionantes actividades en las que estuvo involucrada la Ciudad de North Las Vegas en los últimos meses. Me enorgullece compartir los numerosos eventos de entrega de útiles escolares y fiestas en la piscina que tuvieron lugar no solo en mi distrito, sino en toda la ciudad. Gracias a la increíble colaboración de tantos socios comunitarios, pudimos brindar a los hijos de nuestros residentes una ventaja cuando se trataba de mochilas, suministros, ropa y más.

 

Cada verano, una de mis celebraciones favoritas es el 4 de Julio. Como inmigrante de este país que ha obtenido la ciudadana estadounidense, esta festividad es muy especial para mí y me siento increíblemente agradecida y honrada de poder celebrarlo. Este año fue especialmente significativo ya que mi familia y yo pudimos disfrutar de los fuegos artificiales desde mi oficina en el noveno piso del Ayuntamiento. No solo disfrutamos de una vista increíble, sino que la alcaldesa Goynes-Brown compartía el mismo deseo y lo disfrutamos juntas. La ciudad estaba hermosa y mi gratitud creció mientras pensaba en los derechos que disfrutamos: Vida, Libertad y la Búsqueda de la Felicidad.

*Nuevo Software de Traducción en Tiempo Real para Reuniones Públicas*

 

Siendo la ciudad más diversa de Nevada, la Ciudad de North Las Vegas se alegra de presentar Wordly, un nuevo servicio de traducción en tiempo real impulsado por inteligencia artificial (IA), en la reunión del Concejo Municipal y la Agencia de Desarrollo del 2 de agosto.

 

La comunidad de habla hispana ahora puede comunicarse en tiempo real con nuestros funcionarios gubernamentales durante las reuniones públicas. Wordly funciona capturando al instante los comentarios del orador y enviando la traducción al dispositivo móvil de un participante a través de texto o audio; no se requiere la descarga de una aplicación ni equipo especial.

 

La adopción de este software de traducción en tiempo real es el siguiente paso en los continuos esfuerzos de la Ciudad para expandir la accesibilidad y la participación con la creciente población hispanohablante de la comunidad. Nuestra ciudad es la primera jurisdicción en Nevada y una de las primeras en el país en ofrecer un servicio de traducción en tiempo real impulsado por IA a los residentes. *Estación de bomberos 51 Desayuno con panqueques y casa abierta*

 

En junio, la estación de bomberos 51 de North Las Vegas organizó un desayuno de panqueques y un evento de casa abierta para la comunidad. Fue maravilloso ver a las familias de nuestra comunidad reunirse para conocer a nuestros bomberos y paramédicos. Todos disfrutaron del DJ en vivo, tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar el interior de un camión de bomberos, comer comida deliciosa y practicar la seguridad en bicicleta con un recorrido de rodeo de bicicletas. La comida fue preparada por voluntarios y el Departamento de Bomberos de North Las Vegas. Fue muy conmovedor ver la emoción cuando los niños ganaron bicicletas gratis y las familias recogieron sus premios de rifas.

*Inaugurando la construcción de la nueva Estación de Bomberos de la Ciudad*

 

Hablando de nuestro Departamento de Bomberos de North Las Vegas, a principios de este verano, la ciudad inició la construcción del futuro sitio de nuestra nueva Estación de Bomberos 58. Esta será la novena estación de bomberos en la Ciudad de North Las Vegas y asistirá a más de 30,000 residentes en el área de Tule Springs. ¡La construcción ha comenzado y se espera que se complete a finales del verano de 2024!

 

Los desarrolladores están construyendo y equipando la estación de bomberos como parte del acuerdo de desarrollo negociado con la Ciudad. Quiero agradecer a los desarrolladores de las comunidades planificadas de The Villages at Tule Springs y Valley Vista por ser grandes colaboradores y compartir la visión de este Consejo de mantener a la Ciudad de North Las Vegas como una de las comunidades de seguridad pública más seguras y proactivas de Nevada.

Nuestro Departamento de Policía de North Las Vegas celebró el Segundo Baloncesto y Almuerzo Anual Entre Hermanos y Policía en junio en el Centro Recreativo Silver Mesa. Este evento fue creado como parte de nuestro programa de Vigilancia Orientada a la Comunidad (COP) para fomentar las relaciones positivas y la confianza entre los oficiales y los miembros de nuestra comunidad. *Celebrando el Mes Nacional de los Parques y la Recreación*

 

Nuestro equipo de Parques y Recreación está formado por personas maravillosas y trabajadoras que brindan a nuestros residentes las mejores experiencias al aire libre posibles. En julio, celebramos a nuestro increíble equipo y miembros de la comunidad participando en el Mes Nacional de los Parques y la Recreación.

 

Nuestro equipo organizó un desafío de selfies de julio con el hashtag #DondeCreceLaComunidadCNLV, donde los miembros de la comunidad ganaron premios durante todo el mes visitando diferentes parques, tomándose un selfie y llevando esas selfies a un Centro de Recreación de la Ciudad de North Las Vegas para recibir una tarjeta perforada con premios.

 

En ciudades donde existen sistemas de parques y recreación sólidos, las comunidades fuertes crecen. ¡Gracias a nuestro equipo de Parques y Recreación por sus grandes esfuerzos y dedicación para unir a nuestra comunidad, mantener nuestros parques verdes y hermosos, y proporcionar tantas opciones recreativas tanto en interiores como al aire libre para nuestros residentes de todas las edades!

*¡La Ciudad Regala Más de 1,100 Mochilas y útiles escolares **GRATUITOS!*

 

La Ciudad de North Las Vegas, junto con más de 30 socios comunitarios, se alegró de entregar más de 1,100 mochilas GRATUITAS y materiales escolares a los niños de la comunidad en nuestro evento de Entrega de Útiles Para el Regreso a Clases realizado en el Neighborhood Recreation Center. Sabemos lo desafiante que puede ser económicamente el regreso a clases para las familias y queríamos asegurarnos de que nuestros niños estuvieran lo mejor preparados posible. Gracias a nuestros oficiales de NLVPD y miembros del equipo de la Ciudad que ayudaron en este evento, así como a todos nuestros socios que proporcionaron útiles y su tiempo, incluyendo la Senadora Catherine Cortez Masto, representantes de las oficinas de la Senadora Jacky Rosen y el Congresista Steven Horsford; Bella+Canvas, Amazon, SilverSummit Healthplan y Anthem Blue Cross y Blue Shield.

*Más Entregas de Regreso a Clases en Nuestra Comunidad*

 

El mismo día de la entrega de útiles del regreso a clases en el centro de Recreación Neighborhood, tambien me detuve en Hidden Canyon Place, a conocer y conectarme con algunas de los propietarios de las pequeñas empresas de minorías. StreeHeat Ministries organizó un evento comunitario de regreso a clases y fue maravilloso conocerlos y apoyar sus esfuerzos. Gracias a los Ministerios StreeHeat por todo lo que hacen en la comunidad.

Este verano inauguramos oficialmente el centro comercial en la esquina de Carey y Revere (722 W. Carey Ave.). El centro ahora incluye restaurantes locales, como Wow Wings, Sebastian’s Family Pizza, Jerry’s Down Home Kitchen y Sabores Mexican Restaurant, además de Beyond the Barrier Salon Suites. Estuvimos muy contentos de que los propietarios de los negocios del centro estuvieran presentes para celebrar con nosotros. *Celebrando a los Graduados de 'Soy Posible'*

 

Este verano, la Ciudad de North Las Vegas celebró la reciente clase de graduados del programa 'Soy Posible' del Centro Correccional Comunitario de North Las Vegas. Establecido en 2021 a través del exclusivo Programa de Subvenciones de Tratamiento Residencial para el Abuso de Sustancias del CCC, es el primero de su tipo en las cárceles municipales de Nevada. Con el enfoque principal del programa en la rehabilitación en lugar de la encarcelación, 'Soy Posible' brinda a los infractores herramientas individualizadas para la recuperación con el objetivo de reducir la reincidencia.

 

Felicitamos a todos nuestros graduados y esperamos seguir felicitando a muchas más clases en el futuro.

*Niños de North Las Vegas Visitan la Sede del Equipo de los Raiders*

 

Los niños del programa Safekey de la Ciudad de North Las Vegas, gestionado a través de nuestro Departamento de Parques y Recreación, recientemente tuvieron la increíble oportunidad de visitar la sede del equipo de los Las Vegas Raiders para un evento de regreso a clases. Los Raiders invitaron a estudiantes del Centro Neighborhood Recreation y del Centro de Recreación Silver Mesa a participar en ejercicios de acondicionamiento físico y jugar en los mismos campos de práctica cubiertos en los que los Raiders entrenan. Todos los niños recibieron suministros esenciales para la nueva temporada escolar, además de un par de zapatos nuevos. Los Raiders han sido grandes colaboradores de la comunidad y agradecemos a la organización por hospedar a nuestros niños de North Las Vegas.

*Desconéctate y Juega en el Parque Liberty del Ayuntamiento de North Las Vegas*

 

Nuestro propio Parque Liberty justo fuera del Ayuntamiento recibió a más de 150 niños el 8 de julio para nuestro Segundo Evento Anual 'Desconéctate y Juega'. El evento fue organizado pensando en niños de todas las edades y los inspiró a tomarse un día libre de sus dispositivos electrónicos para jugar e interactuar entre ellos. Cada niño presente, desde los más pequeños de unos meses hasta los de 15 años, recibió juguetes apropiados para su edad gracias a nuestros socios comunitarios. Nuestros bomberos y policías de North Las Vegas, ¡y por supuesto, nuestros K9s!, también estuvieron presentes repartiendo obsequios y jugando divertidos juegos con las familias en la cálida mañana de verano. También hubo muchos helados y actividades acuáticas para mantener a todos frescos mientras avanzaba la mañana. ¡Un enorme agradecimiento a todos nuestros socios comunitarios y voluntarios que hicieron de este evento algo realmente especial para los residentes de la Ciudad de North Las Vegas!

*Jardín Zion Choice*

 

Durante el verano tuve la oportunidad de visitar el Jardín Zion Choice, un proyecto conjunto entre la Ciudad y la Iglesia Metodista Zion United. El objetivo del proyecto es educar e inspirar a los residentes de North Las Vegas a cultivar un huerto y disfrutar de los saludables frutos de su trabajo. La visita formó parte de una reunión vecinal para discutir la reurbanización de dos parcelas adyacentes a la iglesia y la adición de un distrito de superposición de agricultura urbana a estas propiedades. La reurbanización permitirá expandir los servicios, tal como tener un huerto comunitario, un cobertizo de granja, un invernadero, un puesto de venta de productos agrícolas, un laboratorio de tecnología hidropónica y más. Fue emocionante recorrer los terrenos del hermoso jardín y ver los resultados de la agricultura urbana en nuestra ciudad.

*Festival Cultural Maya de Guayaberas*

 

Tuve el privilegio de asistir al 2° Festival Cultural Maya de Guayaberas, que se llevó a cabo en  Neighborhood Recreation Center el 15 de julio. El evento contó con música en vivo, artesanías con vivos colores y texturas y encantadoras guayaberas. Nos conectamos con residentes de la comunidad, celebramos la riqueza de nuestra ciudad y los asistentes del evento aprendieron sobre la guayabera, conocida como la "camisa de Yucatán". Estas prendas tienen una sensación de ligereza y comodidad, lo que las convierte en una selección perfecta para climas calientes.  Lo verdaderamente fascinante es el profundo significado histórico y cultural que tiene la guayabera. Sus orígenes se remontan a diversas regiones, desde México hasta países hispanoamericanos como Cuba y Filipinas. El evento fue un poderoso recordatorio de la herencia cautivadora de muchos residentes de North Las Vegas y sus lazos con la encantadora cultura maya. Nos reunió en una alegre celebración de tradición y diversidad.

El 17 de julio, visité la ubicación más nueva de la Universidad de Nevada, Reno Extensión, que se encuentra frente al Ayuntamiento de North Las Vegas. UNR Extensión es la unidad de extensión de la universidad, que proporciona información valiosa a las comunidades a través de sus oficinas en todo el estado. Esta ubicación más nueva ofrecerá programas como educación para pequeñas empresas y capacitación profesional para la educación temprana,  lo que beneficiará a los jóvenes y las familias de nuestra comunidad. ¡Bienvenidos a nuestro barrio Extensión UNR!
