Hello Residents,

As summer starts to wind down and kids get back to school, I’m excited to share with you all of the exciting activities the City of North Las Vegas was up to over the past few months, including the multiple school supply giveaway events and pool parties. Thanks to the amazing collaboration of so many community partners, we were able to provide our residents’ children a leg-up when it came to backpacks, supplies, clothes and more.

We also continued to celebrate new business developments over the summer with the City hosting a bus tour of Apex Industrial Park where major national and international brands are setting up shop, while also cutting the ribbon on a brand new shopping center specifically built for small, local business owners. As the City continues to grow and build momentum, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our community.

Yours in service,

"*Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown*"

*Fire Station 51 Pancake Breakfast & Open House *

In June I stopped by North Las Vegas Fire Station 51 for our Pancake Breakfast and Open House event. It was wonderful to see families in our community come together to meet our firefighters and paramedics. Everyone enjoyed the live DJ, had a chance to explore the inside of a fire truck, eat delicious food and practice bike safety with a bicycle rodeo course. Mayor Pro Tem Scott Black, an avid cyclist, even took a round on the bike course. The food was prepared by  the North Las Vegas Fire Department, volunteers and our own Councilman Isaac Barron. It was so heartwarming to watch the excitement as children won free bikes and families collected raffle prizes.

Thank you to everyone who came out and to our incredible first responders for hosting a great day!

*Breaking Ground on the City’s Newest Fire Station*

Speaking of our North Las Vegas Fire Department, earlier this summer we broke ground on the future site of our new Fire Station 58. This will be the ninth fire station in the City of North Las Vegas and serve more than 30,000 residents in the Tule Springs area. Construction has begun and is expected to be completed in late summer 2024!

The developers are building and equipping the fire station as part of the development agreement negotiated with the City. I want to thank the developers of the master-planned communities of The Villages at Tule Springs and Valley Vista for being great partners and sharing the vision of this Council to keep the City of North Las Vegas one of the safest, most proactive public safety communities in Nevada.

We look forward to the process of this build and we are so excited to put more firefighters into our neighborhoods!

*Celebrating Our Businesses of the Month*

Over the past few months we had the opportunity to celebrate a few local businesses at our monthly Council meetings.

*Getting a New Perspective - LVGEA Breakfast*

If there is a discussion about Economic Development in Nevada, you know the City of North Las Vegas is there! It is always fun and informational to attend the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance’s (LVGEA) annual Perspective Breakfast. It is a wonderful event!!

The City of North Las Vegas is at the forefront of economic development and redevelopment in Nevada, and I enjoy these opportunities to meet with colleagues, share the best practices we’ve learned and brainstorm new ideas to diversify and grow our local economy. I was glad to be able to attend this year’s LVGEA Breakfast with Councilman Isaac Barron and the amazing members that make up our Economic Development and Government Affairs team. Kudos to the LVGEA, speakers, businesses and leaders for knocking it out of the park again!

*NLVPD Badges and Bros Basketball Brunch*

Our North Las Vegas Police Department held their annual NLVPD Badges and Bros Basketball Brunch in June at Silver Mesa Recreation center. This event was created as part of our Community Oriented Policing (COP) program to encourage positive relationships and trust between law enforcement and our community members. Designed to mirror the NBA All Star Weekend, this event includes skills competitions, pick-up games, a DJ announcer and is SO MUCH FUN!  It is inspiring to see how our police officers not only protect community members, but also go above and beyond to earn their trust.

If you would like to learn more about our Community Oriented Policing or become a volunteer, please visit our *COP webpage* [ https://www.cityofnorthlasvegas.com/residents/police/community-oriented-policing ].

*CNLV Gains More Affordable Housing *

I was very excited to attend the Lake Mead West Apartments grand opening in Ward 2 along with Councilwoman Ruth Garcia-Anderson and Councilman Isaac Barron. I was at the initial groundbreaking and now the project has come to fruition just as expected! Affordable housing is one of the priorities this Council is addressing, as Southern Nevada across the board lacks affordable housing options. The Lake Mead West Apartments help alleviate that and offer living spaces with beautiful amenities, usable community spaces and wrap-around services offered on-site by Hopelink of Southern Nevada.

I want to thank Joe DiRaffaele, Hassan Chaudhry and the entire Foresight Companies team for working with this Council and our City teams to bring this incredible affordable housing option to our residents.

If you would like more information on this project, please visit the *Lake Mead West Apartments website* [ https://www.lakemeadwestapartments.com/ ].

*Supporting Small Businesses*

I was honored to be invited to join the U.S. Conference of Mayors & Wells Fargo’s “Strengthening Small & Micro Business Roundtable.” Myself and other regional mayors and elected officials were joined by local small businesses to discuss best practices and the challenges of growing metro-area small business ecosystems, as well as what municipalities can do to help support small and micro-business owners.

Thank you to Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman for hosting this event and to the small business who participated. By working together regionally and learning from each other we can help small businesses in North Las Vegas and across Southern Nevada thrive.

If you are a current or aspiring small business in North Las Vegas, we may have resources that can help you. Our Small Business Connector (SBC) program is a partnership between the city, UNLV’s Small Business Development Center, Access Community Capital and Employ NV Business Hub to provide small business owners and entrepreneurs with a one-stop shop for funding resources and knowledge. Check us out at https://www.cityofnorthlasvegas.com/business/small-business-connector [ https://www.cityofnorthlasvegas.com/business/small-business-connector ].

*Celebrating Juneteenth *

I was privileged to participate in so many Juneteenth events this past summer. First and foremost was our own city’s Juneteenth flag raising event in Liberty Park outside of City Hall. Being able to witness the ceremonial flag raising filled my heart with excitement as our community joined together in celebration. The City of North Las Vegas was the first municipality in the state to officially recognize Juneteenth as a holiday and close public buildings in its honor. I can’t tell you how proud I am that Juneteenth has now been established as an officially recognized state holiday.

I also had the opportunity to participate in the regional Las Vegas Juneteenth Festival held at World Market Center and address the crowd on the profound significance of commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. I want to express my deepest appreciation to all the individuals who participated and contributed to making these events and others truly unforgettable.

*Celebrating National Park & Recreation Month*

Our Park and Recreation team is made up of wonderful, hard-working individuals who give our residents the best outdoor experiences possible. In July we celebrated our amazing team and community members by participating in National Park and Recreation Month.

Our team hosted a July #WhereCommunityGrowsCNLV Selfie Challenge where community members earned prizes all month long by visiting different parks, snapping a selfie and then taking those selfies to a City of North Las Vegas Recreation Center to receive a punch card worth prizes.

In cities where there are strong park and recreation systems, strong communities grow. Thank you to our Park and Recreation team for your great efforts and dedication to bringing our community together, keeping our parks green and beautiful, and providing so many indoor and outdoor recreational outlets for our residents of all ages!

*Black Girl Magic Event was Truly Magical*

I can’t tell you how honored I was to be recognized as an African American woman who inspires, encourages and champions equitable access to education at the Public Education Foundation’s first annual Black Girl Magic Juneteenth Jubilee Luncheon! The event raised scholarship funds so four incredible young women can continue pursuing their educational dreams.

As a life-long educator and Nevada’s first Black Mayor, I know and understand the importance of equitable access to quality education – education truly is freedom. That’s exactly why I started SNUMA (Southern Nevada Urban Micro Academy) during the pandemic and why we have focused on education as a Council, establishing the CNLV Education Advisory Committee (EAC), partnering with existing schools to understand and address their most critical areas of need, and empowering parents with information and resources.

This important event was sold out, which is awesome!! I can’t wait to see how much it grows in future years and all of the good the Black Girl Magic Scholarship winners will achieve!

*International Association of Women Panel Discussion*

The Las Vegas Chapter of the International Association of Women has a large and engaged membership that I was thrilled to meet in June when I was invited to participate in a panel discussion along with City of Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero and City of Las Vegas Councilwoman Victoria Seaman. In addition to discussing our paths to leadership in local government, we also talked about opportunities for women in the Las Vegas Valley. As the City of North Las Vegas continues to diversify the area’s economy and bring a greater variety of industries and employers to the city, more and different career opportunities arise for women, and men! From medicine, to manufacturing and distribution, good paying, sustainable careers is a main objective of the City of North Las Vegas, and this Council is proud to deliver on that commitment!

*Connecting with the Community*

As Mayor, I get the opportunity to participate in a lot of meaningful events and programs. This past month I was fortunate to be invited to address the Young Democrats of America who hosted their national convention here. We talked about the importance of our country’s youth involvement and participation in civic engagement.

100 Black Men of America, Inc. also hosted their annual conference in Southern Nevada and I was honored to be asked to address their group as well, especially as their conference coincided with the Juneteenth holiday. Partnering with federal departments and connecting with community members is an important part of my position, and my passion.

I was thrilled to be invited to provide the welcoming remarks to staff and volunteers at the Home Ownership Resource Symposium put on by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for community members. The symposium brought together experts and resources for individuals in the community looking to explore homeownership. I am sure our local community members who attended these events took a lot from them and I was excited to be a part of each one.

*The City Celebrates Christmas in July*

I had the honor of participating in the annual Christmas in July event, organized by Goodwill of Southern Nevada. I want to express my deepest gratitude to all of the community partners who assisted in this event including Children's Advocacy Alliance, Foster Kinship, and Helping Hands of Vegas Valley. I am also immensely grateful to our first responders for helping the children shop, and to Santa for braving the scorching heat to make this magical day possible. This event serves as a reminder to spread kindness not only during the holiday season but throughout the year.

The City of North Las Vegas, along with over 30 community partners, was thrilled to give out more than 1,100 FREE backpacks plus school supplies to community children at our Back to School Giveaway event held at Neighborhood Recreation Center! We know how financially challenging back-to-school time can be for families and wanted to make sure our kids were as prepared as possible. *Welcoming New Businesses to the Neighborhood*

This summer we officially cut the ribbon on the shopping center at the corner of Carey and Revere (722 W. Carey Ave.). The center is now home to multiple local restaurants including Wow Wings, Sebastian’s Family Pizza, Jerry’s Down Home Kitchen and Sabores Mexican Restaurant, in addition to Beyond the Barrier Salon Suites. We were so happy that the owners of the center’s businesses were on hand to celebrate with us. Congratulations to all of the local entrepreneurs and thank you to Agora Realty and Management for this wonderful addition to the community. We listened when you said you wanted more restaurants and sit-down dining options!!

They’re getting a jump start on their college career and we commend them for that!

*New AI-Powered, Real-Time Translation Software Launched for Public Meetings*

As the most diverse city in Nevada, the City of North Las Vegas was thrilled to launch Wordly, a new AI-powered, real-time translation service at the Aug. 2 City Council and Redevelopment Agency meeting!

Spanish-speaking community members can now interact in real-time with our government officials during public meetings. Wordly works by instantly capturing a speaker’s comments and sending the translation to a participant’s mobile device via text or audio; no app download or special equipment is required.

Adopting this real-time translation software is the next step in the City’s ongoing efforts to expand accessibility and engagement with the community’s growing Spanish-speaking population. Our city is the first jurisdiction in Nevada, and one of the first in the country, to provide real-time, AI-powered translation service to residents. We started with Spanish translation since more than 40% of North Las Vegas residents identify as Hispanic, however Wordly is equipped to interpret more than 30 languages, and we expect to roll out additional languages in the future!

*Unplug and Play at North Las Vegas City Hall’s Liberty Park*

Our very own Liberty Park right outside City Hall welcomed over 150 kids on July 8 for our Second Annual Unplug and Play event. The event was organized with kids of all ages in mind and inspired them to take a day off from their electronics to play and interact with each other. Every child in attendance from as young as a few months to as old as 15 years received age-appropriate toys thanks to our community partners. Gifts included Lego sets, dollhouses, craft kits, skateboards and so much more! Our North Las Vegas firefighters and police officers—and our K9s, of course! — were also present handing out goodies and playing fun games with the families on the warm summer morning. There was also plenty of ice cream and water activities to keep everyone cool as the morning progressed. A huge thank you to all our community partners and volunteers that made this event truly special for our City of North Las Vegas residents!

*Zion Choice Garden*

Over summer I had the opportunity to visit the Zion Choice Garden, a group project between the City and Zion United Methodist Church. The goal of the project is to educate and inspire North Las Vegas residents to garden and enjoy the healthy fruits of their labor! The tour was part of a neighborhood meeting to discuss rezoning two parcels adjacent to the church and adding an urban agriculture overlay district to these properties. The rezoning will allow services to be expanded such as having a community garden, a farm shed, greenhouse, farm stand, hydroponic technology lab and more. It was exciting to walk the grounds of the beautiful garden and see the results of urban agriculture in our city.

Hello Residents,

As summer starts to wind down and kids get back to school, I’m excited to share with you all of the exciting activities the City of North Las Vegas was up to over the past few months. Thanks to the amazing collaboration of so many community partners, we were able to provide our residents’ children a leg up when it came to backpacks, supplies, clothes and more.

One very special event I had the opportunity to host while also sharing my love of cycling, was the Back to School Pool Party at Silver Mesa Recreation Center. Not only was this a great event to connect with the community and prepare our children for the start of the new school year, it was also a joyous time to see the bright, happy faces of the children who received bikes from the free raffle! I am so grateful for our amazing North Las Vegas residents and everyone who pitched in and supported our summer events.

We look forward to witnessing the sustainable change that this program will bring to the students at both schools and our community.

*Back to School Pool Party*

I was so excited to once again host, with Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick, our annual end of summer Back to School Pool Party. Held at the City of North Las Vegas’ Silver Mesa Recreation Center, kids and their families enjoyed the pool and sun, the tunes being spun by a live DJ, and the free hot dogs, hamburgers and snow cones.

In addition to all of the fun, kids also received free backpacks for the start of the new school year. The City and our partners know how financially challenging back-to-school time can be for families and want to make sure that North Las Vegas kids are as prepared as possible for the new school year.

Finally, eight lucky children received a bicycle during the event’s free raffle. I want to thank all of our partners who made the day possible including Clark County Commissioner Kirkpatrick, the Southern Nevada Health District, HeyDude who donated shoes, and the many more who donated their time, services and funds.

I look forward to a new school year and continuing to help support North Las Vegas schools and students!

Hello Residents,

As summer starts to wind down and kids get back to school, I’m excited to share with you all of the exciting activities the City of North Las Vegas was up to over the past few months. I am proud to share the many back-to-school supply giveaway events and pool parties that took place across the city. Thanks to the amazing collaboration of so many community partners, we were able to provide our residents’ children a leg-up when it came to backpacks, supplies, clothes and more.

I wanted to share a quick announcement that should excite your pups! Our 4th Annual Paws in the Park event will be taking place this fall. Mark your calendars for October 7 and plan to visit us at Aliante Nature Discovery Park. Get ready for a fun time with family and friends as there will be vendors, food trucks, a dog costume contest, dog and ‘hooman’ twinning contest, dog vaccinations and microchipping, and lots of fun activities. Sookie (my pup) and I are so excited to meet you all!

*Fire Station 51 Pancake Breakfast & Open House*

In June North Las Vegas Fire Station 51 hosted a Pancake Breakfast and Open House event for the community.  It was wonderful to see families in our community come together to meet our firefighters and paramedics. Everyone enjoyed the live DJ, had a chance to explore the inside of a fire truck, eat delicious food and practice bike safety with a bicycle rodeo course. The food was prepared by volunteers and the North Las Vegas Fire Department. It was so heartwarming to watch the excitement as children won free bikes and families collected raffle prizes.

Thank you to everyone who came out and to our incredible first responders for hosting a great day!

*Breaking Ground on the City’s Newest Fire Station*

Speaking of our North Las Vegas Fire Department, earlier this summer the city broke ground on the future site of our new Fire Station 58.
