*City Installs New Cameras To Increase Public Safety In Advance Of New Year’s Eve Celebrations*

"New Cameras Will Be Used To Identify Stolen Vehicles"

 

    The city of Las Vegas has deployed 22 cameras in 11 locations downtown close to the Fremont Street Experience, and on major thoroughfares, to improve public safety, starting with New Year's Eve. These cameras read license plates and notify law enforcement in real time of stolen and wanted vehicles.The cameras will improve public safety during New Year's Eve festivities and beyond.

 

    These cameras are not used for traffic control, and will not be used to look for those who speed, run red lights or commit other traffic-related infractions. This type of technology has shown to be effective in recovering stolen vehicles, identifying wanted suspects and acts as a deterrent.

 

    These cameras are currently operational in downtown Las Vegas and are monitored by law enforcement.

 

    In addition, local law enforcement will be working jointly to ensure a safe and happy New Year’s celebration for all tonight.     In addition, the joint Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Department of Public Safety Fremont Street Experience substation will be open New Year's Eve at 420 E. Fremont St., Suite 150.
