Star Child
Artist Rendering by Mark Brandvik
Announcing "Star Child"
By Artist Mark Brandvik
The latest artwork coming to the Medical District in 2025
at Shadow Lane and Wellness Way!
""Star Child" is a sculpture proposed for fabrication and installation at the northeast corner of Shadow Lane and Wellness Way in the heart of the Las Vegas Medical District. A child of ambiguous gender, race and ethnicity is suspended in a constellation of colorful star shapes rising from a round base of similar shapes. The figure dons a stethoscope - a beneficiary of medical care, or perhaps a future medical professional? The image evokes a universal spirit of hope and potential that can serve as a metaphor for a young and growing medical community. The top of the figure’s head is set at a height of 5’ 6½”, the average height of all American adults. The image is a reflection of all of us now and when we were very young. I too am that figure. I was born right across the street at UMC, then known as Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital. The repetitive star symbol motif forms a structural connection that suggests astronomical patterns, local flora, and biological structures. The design is also a nod to mid-century Vegas signage as well as art-historical putti, cherubs and the winged Caduceus medical symbol seen throughout the Medical District." -- Mark Brandvik
Keep an eye out as we track the "labor" of "Star Child"! ??
