*North Las Vegas SMALL BUSINESS CONNECTOR PROGRAM!* "03/15/2023" ________________________________________________________________________

EmployNV Business Hub [ https://employnvbusinesshub.org/ ] is the third step in the City of North Las Vegas' Small Business Connector program, and a resource for North Las Vegas' businesses to provide access to a suite of high-impact services to local businesses.

The hub is an employer-focused center concentrating on the employer’s employment and training needs. The goal is to create a one-stop access point where employers can connect with the resources they need to recover and grow at no cost to them. The CNLV hub is staffed with a Business Solutions Account Manager who is trained to offer employers On-The-Job-Training (OJT) wage reimbursement and referrals for talent recruitment.


* On-the-Job Training is an “earn as you learn” model that is great for both the employer and the employee. It’s an opportunity for employers to hire individuals who have many desirable traits, but need additional training due to skills-gaps between the position they are applying for and their resume.
* OTJ reimbursement ranges (up to $10k maximum per employee) according to the federal WIOA Title 1 Grant:
* "0-50 employees = 90% OTJ Reimbursement "
* "51-100 = 75% OTJ Reimbursement "
* "101+ = 50% OTJ Reimbursement "

*City Hosts First-Ever School Mariachi Competition! *

On March 4, more than 20 local middle and high school Mariachis competed in the first-ever City of North Las Vegas Mariachi Competition at The Amp at Craig Ranch Park. This first-of-its-kind competition in the state brought not just North Las Vegas school Mariachis together, but groups from across the entire valley.

 

Students competed for a variety of awards including Best Trumpet Section, Best Violin Section, Best Vocalist, and more, in addition to 1st-3rd and Overall Grand Champion in their respective divisions.

 

The Overall High School Grand Champion was Del Sol High School, and the Overall Middle School Champion was Monaco Middle School. Each of these school Mariachis collected a $1,000 prize, a huge trophy, and bragging rights for the rest of the year!

 

Congratulations to all of the students who participated and a huge thank you to the parents, family, friends and teachers who supported them.

*Breaking Ground! *

We are excited to welcome BLAK Development Co. and Kalb Industries of Nevada’s latest project to the City of North Las Vegas! In late February, they broke ground on a 52,000-square-foot warehouse that will create jobs and opportunities for area residents. Thirty-thousand square feet will be occupied by the Reece Group, Australia’s largest supplier of plumbing and bathroom supplies. The warehouse is located on Cheyenne Avenue and N. Allen Lane, and is slated to be completed by September 2023. 

 

This project marks the first building in North Las Vegas from BLAK Development and Reece Group’s second showroom in the valley.

*Welcome Spector & Co. to North Las Vegas *

In February we welcomed another new company to our city – Spector & Co. This Canadian supplier of promotional products has created a truly state-of-the-art showroom, warehouse and production facility that includes a 90K+ square foot space with embossing, printing, embroidering and all kinds of machinery. This facility is expected to create nearly 200 jobs when fully operational.

*City Celebrates CARE & Veterans Treatment Court Graduates *

The City is proud to share that 10 community members graduated from our CARE Court and Veterans Treatment Court programs in February! The programs are built on collaboration with prosecutors, defense attorneys, correctional center staff, case managers and court team members all working together to connect participants with resources like transitional housing, substance abuse counseling, job training, employment training and more. This is not an easy program and participants are required to actively participate and engage in the programs and services that will best ensure their future success. Less than two years old, we are seeing positive results from both programs and I look forward to sharing more successes with you in the future.

*Celebrating Nevada Reading Week *

For more than 30 years, Nevada Reading Week has been celebrated across the Silver State in March to promote a life-long love of reading. As an educator, I know and appreciate how important it is to cultivate a mindset of learning. I was thrilled to be able to get out to C.P. Squires and McCall elementary schools during that week and read to students. Thank you to all of the schools who reached out and to our teachers who work with and read to our students on a daily basis!

*Save the Date - 2nd Annual Mayan Cultural Exchange *

I was thrilled to welcome representatives from the state of Yucatan, Mexico who were visiting to promote their event slated for July! This event will be the 2nd Annual Mayan Cultural Exchange held in the City of North Las Vegas. This year, the program will include a “Guayabera Expo” as well as an exhibition of handicrafts from the best international clothing manufacturers, rich cultural food, fun, music and more. *¡La ciudad organiza la primera competencia escolar de mariachis!*

El 4 de marzo, más de 20 mariachis locales de secundaria y preparatoria compitieron en la primera competencia de mariachis de la ciudad de North Las Vegas en The Amp en Craig Ranch Park. Esta competencia, es la primera en su tipo en el estado de Nevada, reunió no solo a los mariachis de las escuelas de North Las Vegas, sino también a grupos de todo el valle.

 

Los estudiantes compitieron por una variedad de premios, incluyendo Mejor Sección de Trompeta, Mejor Sección de Violín, Mejor Vocalista y más, además de competir por el primer al tercer lugar y el Gran Campeón General en sus respectivas divisiones.

El Gran Campeón General de la Escuela Preparatoria fue la escuela Del Sol, y el Campeón General de la Escuela Secundaria fue la escuela Mónaco. ¡Cada uno de estos mariachis escolares recolectó un premio de $1,000, un gran trofeo y el derecho de brillar por el resto del año!

 

Felicidades a todos los estudiantes que participaron y un enorme agradecimiento a los padres, familiares, amigos y maestros que los apoyaron.

¡Nos complace dar la bienvenida al último proyecto de BLAK Development Co. y Kalb Industries of Nevada a la ciudad de North Las Vegas! Este proveedor canadiense de productos promocionales ha creado una sala de exhibición, un almacén y una instalación de producción verdaderamente vanguardistas que incluyen un espacio de más de 90,000 pies cuadrados con estampado, impresión, bordados y todo tipo de maquinaria. Se espera que esta instalación cree cerca de 200 puestos de trabajo cuando esté en pleno funcionamiento.

¡La ciudad se enorgullece de compartir que 10 miembros de la comunidad se graduaron de nuestros programas CARE Court y Veterans Treatment Court en febrero! Los programas se basan en la colaboración con los fiscales, los abogados defensores, el personal del centro correccional, los administradores de casos y los miembros del equipo de la corte que trabajan juntos para conectar a los participantes con recursos como vivienda de transición, asesoramiento sobre abuso de sustancias, capacitación laboral y más. Este no es un programa fácil y se requiere que los participantes participen activamente y participen en los programas y servicios que mejor asegurará su éxito futuro. Este mes, el Ayuntamiento y yo tuvimos el honor de presentar el premio Negocio del Mes al negocio del Distrito 3, Forgotten Not Gone (FNG). Son una organización de prevención del suicidio que combina actividad física y salud mental positiva para mejorar nuestra comunidad de veteranos. FNG proporciona y mantiene una flota de triciclos reclinados velomóviles GRATIS para nuestros veteranos locales y sus familias. ¡Gracias a Forgotten Not Gone por mejorar la vida de los veteranos!

*Taking a STEM Center Tour *

Last month I had the opportunity to tour the North Las Vegas Choice Neighborhood STEM Center and learn all about their urban farming programming. I even got to taste test some of the vegetables they’re growing in their hydroponic garden! It is quite exciting to see the potential for indoor agriculture and even more so to know that the STEM Center is providing training to high school students on a variety of STEM topics.

Esta competencia, es la primera en su tipo en el estado de Nevada, reunió no solo a los mariachis de las escuelas de North Las Vegas, sino también a grupos de todo el valle.

 

Los estudiantes compitieron por una variedad de premios, incluyendo Mejor Sección de Trompeta, Mejor Sección de Violín, Mejor Vocalista y más, además de competir por el primer al tercer lugar y el Gran Campeón General en sus respectivas divisiones.

El Gran Campeón General de la Escuela Preparatoria fue la escuela Del Sol, y el Campeón General de la Escuela Secundaria fue la escuela Mónaco. ¡Cada uno de estos mariachis escolares recolectó un premio de $1,000, un gran trofeo y el derecho de brillar por el resto del año!

¡Nos complace dar la bienvenida al último proyecto de BLAK Development Co. y Kalb Industries of Nevada a la ciudad de North Las Vegas! A fines de febrero, comenzaron la construcción de un almacén de 52,000 pies cuadrados que creará empleos y oportunidades para los residentes del área. Los programas se basan en la colaboración con los fiscales, los abogados defensores, el personal del centro correccional, los administradores de casos y los miembros del equipo de la corte que trabajan juntos para conectar a los participantes con recursos como vivienda de transición, asesoramiento sobre abuso de sustancias, capacitación laboral y más. Durante más de 30 años, la Semana de la Lectura de Nevada se ha celebrado en todo el Estado de Plata en marzo para promover el amor por la lectura para toda la vida. El mes pasado tuve la oportunidad de recorrer el Centro STEM de North Las Vegas Choice Neighborhood y aprender todo sobre su programación de agricultura urbana. ¡Incluso pude probar algunos de los vegetales que están cultivando en su jardín hidropónico! *City Hosts First-Ever School Mariachi Competition! *

On March 4, more than 20 local middle and high school Mariachis competed in the first-ever City of North Las Vegas Mariachi Competition at The Amp at Craig Ranch Park. This first-of-its-kind competition in the state brought not just North Las Vegas school Mariachis together, but groups from across the entire valley.

 

Students competed for a variety of awards including Best Trumpet Section, Best Violin Section, Best Vocalist, and more, in addition to 1st-3rd and Overall Grand Champion in their respective divisions.

 

The Overall High School Grand Champion was Del Sol High School, and the Overall Middle School Champion was Monaco Middle School. Each of these school Mariachis collected a $1,000 prize, a huge trophy, and bragging rights for the rest of the year!

 

Congratulations to all of the students who participated and a huge thank you to the parents, family, friends and teachers who supported them.

*Breaking Ground! *

We are excited to welcome BLAK Development Co. and Kalb Industries of Nevada’s latest project to the City of North Las Vegas! In late February, they broke ground on a 52,000-square-foot warehouse that will create jobs and opportunities for area residents. Thirty-thousand square feet will be occupied by the Reece Group, Australia’s largest supplier of plumbing and bathroom supplies. The warehouse is located on Cheyenne Avenue and N. Allen Lane, and is slated to be completed by September 2023. 

 

This project marks the first building in North Las Vegas from BLAK Development and Reece Group’s second showroom in the valley.

*City Celebrates CARE & Veterans Treatment Court Graduates *

The City is proud to share that 10 community members graduated from our CARE Court and Veterans Treatment Court programs in February! The programs are built on collaboration with prosecutors, defense attorneys, correctional center staff, case managers and court team members all working together to connect participants with resources like transitional housing, substance abuse counseling, job training, employment training and more. This is not an easy program and participants are required to actively participate and engage in the programs and services that will best ensure their future success. Less than two years old, we are seeing positive results from both programs and I look forward to sharing more successes with you in the future.

*Business of the Month *

This month I was honored to present the Business of the Month award to Ward 3 business, Forgotten Not Gone (FNG). They are a suicide prevention organization that combines physical activity and positive mental health to better our veteran community.

FNG provides and maintains a fleet of velomobiles recumbent trikes FREE of charge for our local veterans and their families. Thank you to Forgotten Not Gone for improving veterans' lives!

*Celebrating Nevada Reading Week/Read to Ride *

For more than 30 years, Nevada Reading Week has been celebrated across the Silver State in March to promote a life-long love of reading. I was thrilled to be able to participate and read to students in ALL SEVEN elementary schools in Ward 3!

I was also pleased to launch the Read to Ride program during Nevada Reading Week in partnership with the City of North Las Vegas Library District. The goal is to motivate students to read by offering a bike to students in kindergarten through 5th grade at each school that logs the most reading minutes between the launch date and March 31. 

 

I am happy to report that ALL of the elementary schools in my district signed up to participate and I had the fun opportunity to drop a bike by each school to display during the competition. Those of you who know me know I love cycling and this is such a fun way to encourage play, exercise, and reading!

 

I want to thank Las Vegas Paving Corp., MedicWest Ambulance, Western Elite, and Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas for making this event possible. Be sure to watch for a future newsletter to see the results.
